Garbage's sound is a mix of powerful pop propelled by drum machines and electronic experimentation-- a sort of cyborg rock. The band has a full-throttle mix of pounding dance club beats, jagged, grungy guitar and the seductive voice of Shirley Manson. From the sonic landscapes of My Bloody Valentine, Curve, and Sonic Youth, Garbage adds a distinct sense of accessible pop songcraft. It's art, but the kind that can be dissected by connoisseurs and enjoyed by the masses.

Their 1995 eponymous debut, released on Almo Sounds, met with enormous critical and commercial success. "Number One Crush" was on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack and topped the alternative charts. The band also earned three Grammy nominations.

Garbage (vocalist Shirley Manson, guitarists Steve Marker and Duke Erikson and drummer Butch Vig) started out in Wisconsin with Spooner members Vig and Erikson. Marker, a University of Wisconsin film student and Spooner fan, helped them record their songs. In 1984 Vig and Marker invested in an eight-track and a warehouse and Smart Studios was born.

Spooner became Firetown and continued to record at Smart. Vig and Marker made their living by recording local punk bands. Soon Smart Studios became a popular breeding ground for indie rockers. In the early '90s Vig made his mark producing some of the most groundbreaking grunge/alternative albums, including Nirvana's Nevermind, Sonic Youth's Dirty and the Smashing Pumpkins' Gish and Siamese Dream.

In 1993 Vig, Erikson and Marker worked together on remixes for bands like Nine Inch Nails and House of Pain. An impromptu jam session led to the birth of Garbage. The three producers experimented endlessly to extract the strangest noises from their instruments that they could. Things could have continued on this way forever, but one night in 1994 Vig saw a video by Angelfish on MTV. Vig knew that the singer of Angelfish, Edinburgh native Shirley Manson, was the voice of Garbage. You can guess what happened from there.
